As an artist, how do we define success.
Is it a sold-out show, collection, the number of followers, or is it creating something honest that makes us just feel proud? When I was working in the pharma industry, I knew I was successful based upon numbers, compensation and client relationships. With art and creating there is so much more ambiguity and sometimes it’s hard to keep the wind in your sails and not let fear and doubt creep in.
This is exactly what happened to me halfway through my 100 paintings project. I put my brushes down and didn’t paint for months. It wasn’t for lack of inspiration, it was simply because I was afraid. And then one day, I picked up my brushes and began to paint anyway. I played with different mediums, colors and styles, excited to come out on the other side and let myself grow. Some pieces made me happy and others taught me something.
I'm not sure where I stand with my 100 paintings project, but I do know where I stand with my art. I'm lucky to have something that challenges me to go deeper, be honest, present, interested and always hopeful.
Isn't that a form of success?
